VACATIONS

A TIME FOR RENEWING INTERIOR LIFE

On JULY 18, 2004, Pope John Paul, who had just returned from a 12-day vacation period in the mountains of northern Italy was joined at noon by several thousand faithful who prayed the Angelus with him as he spoke from the balcony overlooking the inner courtyard of the summer residence.

In reflections made before the Angelus, he highlighted the Gospel passage where Jesus visits the home of Mary and Martha, noting that "while Martha was busy with household chores, Mary was seated at the Lord's feet and listened to His word. Christ affirms that 'Mary has chosen the good portion which shall not be taken away from her'. Listening to the word of God is the most important thing in our life."

The Pope pointed to the many occasions for listening to God: by reading Sacred Scripture, in private or community prayer, in silence before the tabernacle and "especially on Sundays when Christians are called to meet and listen to the Lord, ... through participation in the Mass."

"When, through the action of the Holy Spirit, God resides in the heart of the believer, it becomes easier to serve our brothers. That happened in a singular and perfect way in Mary Most Holy. We entrust this vacation time to her, so that it will be best used as a propitious occasion for rediscovering the primacy of interior life."

NEW TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD?

A parishioner is a member of a Parish Family. As such, he or she should be registered with the Parish and be committed through their participation in the life of the Parish community: Spiritually, socially and financially. In order for the priest of our parish to issue certificates, recommendations, references etc., or for children to be registered in our school, the person(s) requesting the documents, letter or admission to our school must be registered and attend Mass and the sacraments regularly at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. If you are not registered or do not practice the faith, the priests are put in an awkward position when these requests are made; the priest should not issue such items to people they do not know to be members of our parish family. To register in our Parish, please call the rectory and ask for an appointment.

WHY GO TO CHURCH?

A churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I’ve gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So I think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.

This started a real controversy in the "letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

"I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me. I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"

Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

St. John Neumann Place to become a reality!

In a January 2004 in a letter to Cardinal Rigali, the people living in the vicinity of the former St. John Neumann High School requested that the Archdiocese consider the development of this site to benefit the elderly of South Philadelphia. This vision is about to become a reality. On march 9, 2006 the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) awarded the Archdiocese of Philadelphia a tax credit allocation of $12 million for the development of St. John Neumann Place, the conversion of the former high school into affordable housing for seniors. Additional funding has been provided by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the City of Philadelphia.

Construction on the 75 apartments is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2006 with a targeted completion date of December 2007. Catholic Health Care Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will own and operate the housing. For more information, please contact Suzanne O’Grady 215-790-9536.

BE GONE, HUSTLE AND BUSTLE!

You are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Corinthians 1:7)

Is there a purpose to Advent that we can easily miss? Yes, if we aren’t alert. Advent calls us to step aside from those false gods, Hustle and Bustle, those two-bit idols that demand so much of us. Advent calls us aside for at least a moment each day. Be gone, Hustle and Bustle! For the moment anyway. The true spirit of Advent says: "Stop and think. In these weeks when the world pummels you senseless with other messages, you already have the gifts that matter most— the gifts that last. During Advent think about all the blessings you have already received. Your life is filled with wonder. Wonders beyond description, wonders you overlook most of the time. Think about it. "You are not lacking in any spiritual gift." You’ve still a long, long way yo go before your spiritual gifts are fully realized. We all have a long way to go. But think about it......and the light will dawn. "You are not lacking in any spiritual gift."Holy Spirit, fill me with your gifts of Advent ---patience, hope and joy. Help me to draw spiritual nourishment from this Advent season by giving myself to you generously for just a few minutes each day. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP

We are obliged to be stewards of the Church--- collaborators in continuing the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, which is the Church’s essential mission. This mission — proclaiming and teaching, serving and sanctifying is our task. It is the personal responsibility of each one of us as stewards of the Church. Pray the Holy Spirit, whose gracious action conforms us to Jesus Christ and to the Church, will enlighten us and help us to renew our commitment as the Lord’s disciples and stewards of His bountiful gifts.

Unrelieved stress can lead to depression that will affect not only our own lives and health but the lives of those around us. There is more than one way to manage or relieve stress. Fortunately, we can choose the method that would best suit our lifestyle. Some methods for giving respite from worry and cares are really very simple and are not as difficult as we would imagine. We can use the time it takes to do some everyday tasks to help lift out spirits.

From the Safe Environment Program

Protecting God’s Children In order to recognize a typical child molester, adults in the community must develop a healthy suspicion about each and every adult who spends time with children. We must be alert to the signs that some adults might represent a risk to the children in their care. Adults must be willing to speak up when they notice that an adult: * always wants to be alone with children * always seems more excited to be with children than adults * gives gifts to children without permission, and encourages them to keep secrets from their parents and guardians * lets children do things their parents would not allow them to do * thinks rules don’t apply to them
